The electrodes are positioned on the upper legs but with BionicGym’s sophisticated impulses we bring in all the lower limbs. E.g. The nerve to the calf muscle runs through the thigh so we target it there giving you calf contractions... We even have a program that preferentially targets the glutes (bum). At low levels - for easy calorie burn - the perceived contractions will be primarily in the thighs. Of course, at higher levels, you get a proper cardio workout.

Yes! BionicGym at high intensities makes people sweat, be breathless and the heart races. For many people the heart rate responds immediately in the very first session. As they push up the intensity of the workout their heart increases like they were running. For others, it may take several weeks training. It depends upon your body type and fitness level. Some long distance athletes (with slow-twitch muscle fibers and big efficient hearts) may find that they need to train up these metabolic pathways with their BionicGym first to get a really good response. Likewise for some people who are unfit and lacking 'explosive' cardio-training. Here, we need to train up the muscle fibers to burn sugars at a high rate... then this places a high demand for oxygen and blood flow, increasing your heart rate.
The heart rate response is higher when you use your BionicGym standing and also depending on the Workout you choose - we recommend "Twinkle-Toes" standing as it brings in a lot of calf contractions.
We haven’t had the resources yet to research the full benefits of BionicGym. Each new form of training, e.g. plyometrics or interval training, confers a specific training benefit. BionicGym is quite unlike any voluntary training and so the adaptive mechanisms will be unique. We know that BionicGym can greatly increase the fitness levels of ‘normal’ people. However, whether it can increase the fitness of the elite athlete above and beyond what he could do with just normal/ ‘voluntary’ training remains to be tested.
There are many areas of research that we wish to pursue. E.g. simply as a complement or even substitute for some of their regular exercise sessions. Allowing greater training without loading the joints/ bones in the same way. Or, say, to train particular muscle fibers that cannot be ordinarily trained outside of competition. Or to develop particular metabolic pathways, e.g. the lactate shuttle pathway. Or a potentiator/enabler for regular exercise. We have some interesting case/anecdotal evidence that if you do an intense but short (say ~15min) bout of BionicGym a half-hour or more before an activity like soccer then your performance will improve. Surprisingly your heart rate will be higher but everything feels much easier.
