It Started with an Epiphany!

Twenty years ago, Dr Louis Crowe, an Irish Medical Doctor, went for a swim in the cold Irish sea. Getting out, he shivered like he always would, only this time, he noticed something; His teeth chattered at the same speed his legs shook.

How it works

We mimic shivering! Nature’s hack - Nature’s way of creating heat or burning calories is to shiver. As you get colder you shiver more intensely but at the same rate (7-8Hz).

Because the energy consumption is not related to the force or tension generated but rather the shortening and lengthening of the muscle fibers.

Impulses through the BionicGym Wraps stimulate the motor-neurons [nerves-to-muscles] in the legs and gluteal muscles [bum] telling them to contract repeatedly. (They relax or lengthen by themselves). FAQs

How many Calories can I burn while using BionicGym?

With training: typically 500+ calories. In the laboratory when we’ve tested people - once they were used to BionicGym and had trained upon it - people were able to exercise at a rate burning 500+ calories/hr. Like the calories burnt on a bicycle, this figure varies enormously.

Can I use BionicGym at low levels while driving?

No!!

You lose some control over your muscles so switch the unit off before doing anything potentially dangerous... even walking upstairs, etc. Please be sensible!

What other major muscles does it target other than the thighs?

The electrodes are positioned on the upper legs but with BionicGym’s sophisticated impulses we bring in all the lower limbs. E.g. The nerve to the calf muscle runs through the thigh so we target it there giving you calf contractions... We even have a program that preferentially targets the glutes (bum). At low levels - for easy calorie burn - the perceived contractions will be primarily in the thighs. Of course, at higher levels, you get a proper cardio workout.

What are the common benefits or results that users are reporting?

They feel great! And energized - especially those using it at high intensities. Many report substantial weight loss, particularly those who use it a lot over a short period of time and with a diet. Obviously, people also report being able to run further, faster, etc. Some like the convenience of doing it at a low level for hours while working and others like to get the endorphin rush of a more intense workout.

Should I see my HR increase during workouts?

The heart rate response is not typical of people in their first few sessions. It takes a while for your muscles to adapt, etc.

What are the effects of BionicGym on athletes? Can it increase VO2 max for runners & cyclists? Can it be used to prevent deconditioning when athletes are temporarily injured?

We haven’t had the resources yet to research the full benefits of BionicGym. Each new form of training, e.g. plyometrics or interval training, confers a specific training benefit. BionicGym is quite unlike any voluntary training and so the adaptive mechanisms will be unique. We know that BionicGym can greatly increase the fitness levels of ‘normal’ people. However, whether it can increase the fitness of the elite athlete above and beyond what he could do with just normal/ ‘voluntary’ training remains to be tested.

There are many areas of research that we wish to pursue. E.g. simply as a complement or even substitute for some of their regular exercise sessions. Allowing greater training without loading the joints/ bones in the same way. Or, say, to train particular muscle fibers that cannot be ordinarily trained outside of competition. Or to develop particular metabolic pathways, e.g. the lactate shuttle pathway. Or a potentiator/enabler for regular exercise. We have some interesting case/anecdotal evidence that if you do an intense but short (say ~15min) bout of BionicGym a half-hour or more before an activity like soccer then your performance will improve. Surprisingly your heart rate will be higher but everything feels much easier.

We believe that in many disciplines/events athletes will not be able to compete without using this training technique.

Does the BionicGym app show calories burned?

No. And because we are all so different it is difficult to give an accurate estimation without monitoring the effect on your body. Many people use a heart rate monitor as an estimate of calories burnt.

Can I use BionicGym on other parts of my body?

No. The stimulation is designed especially for your legs and will not work well elsewhere and is potentially dangerous.

How regularly should I replace the gel electrode pads?

We say typically every 30 sessions or so. However, this very much depends on your skin type/condition, how you use them, or if you sweat a lot.

Do you have a Warranty?

Yes. There is a one-year technical warranty on the product. Note the electrodes are consumable and the wraps are a garment and are expected to be replaced from time-to-time depending on usage.
